As a first time mom, I have done a TON of research about each new step in our baby’s life. Our son just recently turned 5 months old and we decided it was time to start giving him baby food. I have done research about what types of food to start with, making your own baby food and baby led weaning and we ultimately decided to make our own baby food. We decided that this was the best option for us.
Why make your own baby food?
- You know exactly what is going into your baby’s food.
- It’s cheaper!
- It’s fun and easy!
What you need to make your own baby food:
- Food Processor | Do yourself a favor and don’t waste your money on the fancy “baby bullet” or baby food maker. Just invest in a decent food processor and you’re golden. The one I love to use is the Cuisinart 11 Cup Food Processor in stainless steal.
- Storage Containers | These are a must if you plan to make more than a few days worth. These little containers from OXO Tot are the BEST. They come in 2 ounce and 4 ounce containers. Each container also has ounce measurements on the side. They are airtight, waterproof (I have tested because I have defrosted food in hot water), dishwasher and microwave safe. They are also BPA, phthalate and PVC free. It’s safe to say we love these and I highly recommend these storage containers if you plan to make your own baby food.
- Recipes & Tips | When I first started making our son’s baby food I found a lot of great tips and recipes in “Real Baby Food” by Jenna Helwig. The first veggie we gave him was peas.
Here are the steps to making your own baby food peas:
- Add water to the bottom of a sauce pan than add your frozen peas. Simmer until peas are cooked about 5 minutes. We use Simply Balanced Organic Peas from Target.
- Once they are cooked through add peas to your food processor. Blend peas until you have the consistency you prefer for your baby.
- I have found that you’ll most likely need to add additional water. I add water by the tablespoon until I find the consistency I prefer.
- Once complete, I spoon the peas into our OXO Tot storage containers. I freeze some and add a few to the refrigerator.
Another fun tip I learned from “Real Baby Food” is that you can add some fresh basil to your peas. I would suggest doing so after you know what foods sit well with your baby due to allergies.
