How to decorate your kitchen island for function and style

hearth and hand tray, target tray, kitchen island decor

When decorating my kitchen island I always make sure that it is functional, stylish and serves a purpose. For those looking to freshen up their kitchen on a budget I highly suggest Target (duh!) Target’s Project 62 brand is all over our house. I am also a fan of of Joanna and Chip Gaines’ brand, Hearth & Hand with Magnolia, that is sold by Target.

This past summer we moved into a new home and hopped into a kitchen renovation. And now I am finally getting around to the decor and finishing touches. Our kitchen, dining area and family room is a large open concept room as you enter our house. I take a lot of pride in what this part of the house looks like because it’s where we spend most of our time. Our kitchen island is such a bug focal point so I always have fun rearranging and updating it. Here are the steps I take whenever I decorate our kitchen island.

1. ALWAYS START WITH A TRAY

Trays are a perfect start to any kitchen island.  They help serve as a function and can be stylish at the same time. I always start with a tray because they can be easily used for hosting a cheese plate or simply carrying a cup of coffee and breakfast for two to the couch.  The tray I started with in the photo above is from Target’s Hearth & Hand with Magnolia brand.

2. Add a bowl

I usually add a bowl on top of the tray. I use this to hold fruit, seasonable vegetables or maybe even some candy around the holidays. Again this adds function and provides easy access to a healthy food choice (most of the time).  The bowl pictured above is from Target’s Project 62 line.

3. ADD A PLANT

Now it’s time for a plant or some seasonal flowers. This is a perfect way to add some color and inexpensive decor to your island. In the photo above I added some fake succulents from Target’s Project 62. I normally don’t opt for a fake plant but in this case I loved the color and how real they looked. Project 62 at Target has some great options to choose from.

4. ADD ITEMS THAT WORK FOR YOU

I added coasters because we use them often. The coasters in the photo were a gift but I found similar ones here.  But maybe you drink tea or coffee daily and would like to keep some sugar or teabags on your tray.

It’s as simple as that friends. How do you decorate your kitchen island? Comment below and let me know.
