Baby’s First Road Trip

road trip with baby, scratch map

Our first road trip with our little babe was a short 3 hour trip to Northern Virginia to visit family. This trip was a test for many trips we have planned throughout the next year with our little one. We can now cross off 3 new states on Tray’s map; Delaware, Maryland and Virginia!

1. How did we survive our first road trip with a 12 week old baby?

Well, for one our son is a very happy baby. And two, we were prepared. Before we left for a 3 hour trip we made sure he was changed and fed. This way he napped or was content for most of the 3 hour trip. We also used a Backseat Baby Mirror. This was a lifesaver and made it so easy to check on the baby. We had diapers, bottles and toys in easy reach just in case we would need to stop. We also put out son in the Pampers Baby Dry Diapers. These diapers are for 12 hour dryness and mostly we use them at night.

2. What did we pack?

Since we were staying at my Aunt and Uncle’s home we knew we’d be able to overpack so we did pack a lot. We packed: Pack ‘n Play, crib sheets, Dock-a-Tot, bouncy seat, toys, baby tub, changing essentials, feeding essentials, diaper bag, LOTS of baby clothes, jogging stroller and breast pump. P.S. The Pack n’ Play is crazy easy to set up and comes with a travel bag. We loved it so much we bought two to have! We also used this in our bedroom for a few months as well. I highly recommend it.

3. What did we end up needing?

We did NOT need the Dock-a-Tot (he slept great in the Pack ‘n Play!). And we barely used the bouncy seat. Next, time we road trip we will most likely not need the bouncy seat, baby tub, Dock-a-Tot and breast pump. I did overpack on clothing but I’d still pack the same way. I’d rather be over prepared with clothing.

4. What is there to do in Northern Virginia?

There is so much to do in Northern Virginia! We’ve been there many times to visit family and have yet to experience it all. My aunt and uncle live on a farm and vineyard in Purcellville, VA. In this area you can camp, go antiquing, enjoy a hike on the Appalachian Trail, visit farmers markets, breweries and wineries and so much more. While in town we helped my aunt and uncle prepare for next season’s wine and the opening of their tasting room.  We also visited Bear Chase Brewing Company in Bluemont, VA. It has a beautiful view, great beer and is family friendly. I’d highly recommend checking it out if you’re in the area. We also returned to B Chord Brewing which is where we hosted our rehearsal dinner last year. It was special to visit these places a year after our wedding with our babe. SO MUCH CAN HAPPEN IN A YEAR!

5. What did we learn?

If you’re traveling with a baby planning and teamwork is key. We made sure to have everything ready and packed for the car when the time came. I suggest planning your travel time appropriately so that your little one is fed and content. I also suggest having easy access to bottles (if bottle feeding), diapers and toys. Happy baby = happy travels.
